Let me start by reminding you all that this is my personal blog.
Okay, now I can make you all mad…
So, there have been a lot of bills over the past few years that focus on including pets in domestic violence protection orders (or some version of this). They stem from the fact that, as I know well, pets are often used by abusers as tools to control, threaten, etc. victims. I’ll never, ever, forget the story of a woman for whom I advocated in St. Louis; she told me with wrenching breaths and heaving sobs of her husband’s disgusting, horrific, and unforgivable murder of her beloved Pug. I almost couldn’t process it all.
I back these bills. I think they are important and necessary. The thing that gets me is that people who fish, hunt, and eat other animals support bills like this but in no way make a connection to how they themselves are violent against animals. How can you advocate for a bill to “protect animals and their owners from harm” and eat another animal that night for dinner? How can you allow another animal to go through the terrifying, horrendous, oppressive, and murderous process that it takes to get its body or its products onto your plate? Because it’s not as cute as a dog?
I simply can’t read email messages about these bills that end with “because humans and animals deserve to be safe and free from harm” knowing that the people who wrote or are sending them to me are going to go harm other animals, consume the non-consenting bodies of other animals, put bullets and hooks in them, that very day.
I’m not an all-or-nothing connectionist. I think it’s great that people see this link. AND I’m not afraid to ask for more. Absolutely, let’s pass these bills. Let’s then look at the culture that allows people to think this type of violence is okay. Let’s look at the industries we support. Because one thing is for certain – we’ll never end violence against women as long as we allow violence of any type to occur.
(All of this being said, I love you all. I know you are on your own paths to peaceful and just living and I thank you for even making it to the end of this post.)
