What is society? In all of the years I’ve worked towards social justice, we have consistently approached society as if it is simply a grouping of individual human beings. Yet it seems to me that society is much more holistic than a singular grouping of individual human beings. I see society as the environment in which we live. This environment consists not only of human beings who deserve justice, but also of nonhumans, organisms, locations, and entities that surround us. Society consists of all that informs our behaviors. It is that in which we exist. To narrowly define society is to restrict our definition of social justice. Even those who care only for the wellbeing of humans would certainly acknowledge that the environment in which we live must be healthy for humans to thrive. This environment is the society surrounding us. The whole deserves justice. A just whole means just pieces. Working towards justice for any human neccessitates justice for all surrounding and informing the individual.
